Chairman of District Council

Back in May 2018, Councillor John Clarke was elected Chairman of the North West Leicestershire District Council and we are thrilled that he chose to support Hospice Hope as one of his two charities for his term of office, which runs until 21st May 2019. We would like to thank him for his wonderful support. Here is John’s story:

Hospice Hope and Me

The incoming Chairman at North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) will choose his/her charity or charities when taking up the post. It is customary to have more than one. When I was asked to be Chairman of NWLDC I thought long and hard about my choices. Having watched my older brother change from a world leader in his field of chemistry to someone who just sat in a chair all day really cemented the choices for me. Watching the rapid deterioration of his dementia was terrifying. The struggle his wife endured especially in the later stages before he was permanently in a nursing home also focused my mind.

I wanted a national charity and a local one. The national charity I chose is the Alzheimer’s Society. The local charity had to be one which brought help and respite not only to the seriously ill but to the carer of that patient.

When my brother went into day care, in Huddersfield where they lived, it brought a great relief to my sister in law for those few hours. I learned of Hospice hope, an excellent local charity doing a tremendous amount of good. I was made aware of the charity’s need for new premises and I was determined to help in any small way I could. My two charities were chosen. By choosing Hospice Hope I am being given the chance to promote the charity and raise awareness of the good works done there. I want to bring the name to the fore when holding charity events. So far my fund, and consequently Hospice Hope, has benefitted from a cake sale I had in the Council Offices (two more sales to come), the Coalville Colour run raised another £200 and a fund-raising dinner added another £750 to the pot.

My next fund-raising cake sale is in the Council Offices on the 5th November when the great Yorkshire traditional Parkin will be on sale as well as other cakes and I will have a raffle as well. I will do my very best to help all at Hospice Hope do their very best for the guests.
